Gourmet Artists' Retreat in Provence, September 1-8, 2018
Keli is headed to Provence September 1-8, 2018 for a womens' art and food retreat.
Our home for the week will be La Madonne, an 8-bedroom restored farmhouse owned by an artist. La Madonne is a short walk from the village of Rousillon, designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, and Keli's favorite in Provence.
Rousillon is situated in the heart of one of the biggest ochre deposits in the world, and is famous for its magnificent red cliffs and ochre quarries. Rousillon is like an artist's pallet, with the infinite combinations of colors varying from yellow to purple with all the shades of pink and red in between, and is the perfect venue for this unique retreat.
We'll tour villages and markets, indulge in delicious meals with our private chef and in local restaurants, we'll learn how to use natural pigments in painting, and use our new-found skills to create a travel journal, plus Kathy Fox will be joining us to teach card-making techniques for our artwork.
For artistic inspiration, we'll visit the Sunday Antique Market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. This little gem of a village is full of antique shops and restaurants, the Sorgue River, dotted with water wheels, winds its way through the town creating charming scenes to photograph and sketch.
On Monday we'll walk the Ochre Trail in Roussillon and tour the Mathieu Ochre Factory where we'll learn to mix our own paints from the natural ochre pigments.
We get our "gourmet fix" on Tuesday at the picturesque market in Gordes, also designated as one of the most beautiful villages and markets in France (A Good Year was filmed here). In the afternoon, we'll drive to the Abbey Notre-Dame de Senanque to experience incomparable elegance and serenity.
Local artist, Francios Viol, will be our instructor on Wednesday at the Ochre Conservatory as we learn to use our hand-made paints.
Other adventures will include a truly unique art experience at Carrieres de Lumieres in Baux de Provence...master artworks are projected onto the walls of an abandoned limestone quarry accompanied by a classical music presentation, we'll visit other markets and villages as time permits, and cooking classes and wine tasting will round out our gourmet experience.
